SERVICES TO THE SCHOOLS
THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IS HERE TO SERVE YOU!!
The Schiller Park Public Library strives to serve the recreational and informational needs of all ages and all community groups. Students and teachers represent an important segment of those we serve. The public library, however, can only supplement the resources of school libraries. Our goal is to work in cooperation with schools to meet the needs of students and educators. We invite you to visit the library and become familiar with the types of materials available and the services offered to teachers and students. The Youth Services Department and all library personnel will be glad to assist you with your informational needs.

Teachers may borrow up to 30 books, for a 4-week loan, on a valid school library card. Library cards have been issued to each school, and teachers are encouraged to use their school's card when making loans for classroom use. The Youth Services Department will be happy to gather books to be picked up or assist you to find them yourself. Fines for overdue books are $.10 per day per item.
Textbooks for grades 4 - 12 are available for use in the library only. Please send us a copy of any new textbooks, if one is available, and let us know which ones have been replaced so we may return them to you. Please mark the grade level in the book.
The library subscribes to over 150 magazines for adults and young people. American Girl, National Geographic World, YM, and Highlights for Children are some of the most popular titles with young students. Back issues may be checked out for one week.
In addition to our own collection, copies of articles can be obtained from other libraries in the Suburban Library System, for magazines we do not own. Please allow one week for these requests to be processed and received. There is no charge for this service. Also available is access to an online indexing and abstracting periodical database. Approximately, three quarters of the magazines listed with this service are full text and can be printed out at $.10 per page.
Four magazines may be checked out at a time for a one week period, with overdue items costing $.10 per day each.
Three (3) CDs may be checked out by those who are 16 years of age or older (must prove age with picture ID) on a one week loan. Fines are $.10 per day per item. CDs can not be put in bookdrops. There is a $1.00 fine per item for putting them in the bookdrop.
Educational and Informational CD ROMS are available for checkout by any patron. These may be checked out four (4) at a time for 2 weeks. Overdue fines are $.10 per day per item. CD ROMS can not be put in the bookdrops.
Patrons with a valid Schiller Park adult card (18 years of age or older, must prove age with picture ID) may check out 2 videos/DVDs titles at a time (maximum of no more than 2 titles). Feature films are checked out for 3 days, non-fiction films are for one week. Overdue items are $2.00 per day per item. Videos and DVDs can not be put in the bookdrops. There is a $2.00 fine per item for putting them in the bookdrops.
Audio books may be checked out four (4) at a time for a two (2) week period. This means you can check out four Books on Tape, four CD Spoken, four Juvenile Kits (Books on Tape for Middle School to High School) and four Easy Kits (Easy Reader Books and Tape) for two (2) weeks. There is a $1.00 fine each, if returned in the bookdrop. Overdue fines are $.10 per day per item.
METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM ASSISTANCE
We would be happy to assist you in searching the OPACs (On-Line Public Access Catalog) for items you need. The Schiller Park Public Library staff can request items through the System from other libraries. We must be given ample time to request and receive any items requested, a minimum of 2 full weeks. These items would be kept in reserve in the Youth Services Room on our Special Collections shelves and can not be checked out. They would be on loan to us for 2 weeks only.
With advance notice, at least one full week please, the staff will be happy to gather special collections together for assignments. Items will be held on our Special Collections shelves in the Youth Services Room for the length of the assignment. We reserve the right to limit the number of items that can be checked out per student or it they can be checked out at all. Reference books included in Special Collections can not be checked out.
Someone from the Youth Services Department will be glad to visit classrooms to give library instruction, tell stories, or give book talks. We also invite classes to visit the library. Please call to set up a mutually convenient time.
Flyers describing up coming programs at the library are distributed to the schools in September, January and May of each year. The May flyer will also contain Summer Reading Program information.
We are always glad to help students find materials for assignments. Teachers may use the Assignment Alert Form, phone the library, fax us, or stop in to see us with information about short term assignments. Notifying us in advance relieves the problem of a few students checking out all of the needed sources leaving other students with no information. If we are unable to provide sufficient materials to a student, we will send a Teacher Notification Form to school with them to let the teacher know they tried to complete their assignment. With the school and the public library working together as a team, we can both be more effective in meeting the students informational needs.
Please stop by, call or fax us - We Love Hearing From You!!
A library card from the Schiller Park Public Library (for residents), from another Metropolitan Library System (MLS) Library, or almost any other Public Library in the Chicago area, is needed to borrow materials. Patrons from outside MLS must register their library card with MLS (bring a picture ID), those under 18 must be accompanied by parent or guardian. The home library will be called to check the patrons status before you can check out any items. Chicago Public Library patrons must bring in their Chicago card and a picture ID. After their status is checked they will be registered and they will receive their Metropolitan Library System card in the mail. If you don't know whether your library card can be used at this library, or weather you will need to wait to check out, please call the library. If you live in an area not served by a public Library, call to find out the fee assessed for a non-resident card.
To obtain a Schiller Park Public Library card the patron must bring in two valid pieces of identification with their name and correct Schiller Park address on it. Parents must show ID children under 18 years of age and sign for them. Children must be present with parent or guardian and 5 years of age to receive a card.

Two word processing computers are available for public use. To use the computer the patron must have their library card or drivers license. Programs are on the hard drives on all the computers. The computers are for word processing, spreadsheet, and database maintenance only. The library highly recommends that patrons bring in a disc to save their work.
The library has multiple Internet Access terminals. Students must be in at least 6th Grade to use the Internet alone (without a parent), otherwise their parent/guardian needs to be present. Their parent/guardian and child must complete Internet User Agreement Forms and a sticker will be placed on the child's library card indicating permission to use the Internet. Adults must present ID or library card at the front desk to use the Internet. Use is for one hour, sessions may be extended if no one is waiting. Staff will assist on search term usage, but patron must know how to use the Internet. Click here for the Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
